…a tribute to an incredible companion.
Don Williams, one of my favorite country songwriter/musicians, is known as the “gentle giant” because of larger than life presence but also for his quiet and gentle demeanor. Last week Damien, Sweets companion/guardian dog of 8 years passed on. After Damien grew out of his puppy stage, I saw him as a gentle giant. He was so big (horse dog) actually…lol, well to someone who was terrified of larger than life dogs he was.
But this horse-dog came to give me and my husband such peace of mind when it came to our daughter’s safety. If you’re a parent, you know how we worry about your kids constantly whether they are near or far but especially far. Since our daughter was off at college several states away—and quickly after he came into the family, he provided us that sense of peace that no matter where S was, she was being protected. For he did many, many times—from creepos, from fires, from harm.
I will forever be grateful to him for that.
But, he also did one other incredible thing. He made me comfortable with large dogs. A fear I NEVER thought I would ever get over. Because of him, I learned to not feel the anxiety and panic that I had known for so many years.
Then, a couple of months ago when I was up visiting… the night before I left, he did something else. Something he had never done to me. He gently jumped up on the sofa where I was sitting and he crept onto my lap.
I was so shocked and surprised by this action and wondered what on earth he was thinking. Thinking back now, it was as though he wanted to make sure one last time if he had accomplished his job with me. I am thankful for that last whisper I gave him – thanking him for taking care of our baby girl.
You might think that this is a silly post, but dogs can be so special (as I’ve learned over the years)! My mom always told us that children and people need animals because they teach us to be caring adults and she is absolutely right. But the amount of love, companionship and respect they give in return is hard to top!
So thank you dear Damien- may you rest in peace knowing that your job here was well done and your love immeasurable! You will be missed, not forgotten and you will remain a huge part of our hearts!
