These pictures should terrify us! This is the once beautiful Rio Grande river. It once flowed and flowed and reached the Gulf of Mexico. Many of us sadly are unaware that since the early 2000’s the river no longer reaches the Gulf. Did YOU know that? Like many things that we take for granted daily—WATER is one of them. Have you ever considered what life would be like without WATER??? Well you should!
I have always been a “water nazi” -as my kids would call me. I have always been terrified that one day we will be facing this terrible reality that we might just run out of water. I can’t stand it when people just run their faucets without giving thought of how much water they’re wasting, when people run their stupid (yes, senseless waste of water), sprinkler systems, that are usually always misdirected and waste more water than what is actually directed towards their lawns. Back in the late 80’s I remember reading about 1944 treaty with Mexico, basically a treaty stating that we would loan water to Mexico for irrigation, agriculture purposes. To this day Mexico refuses to repay that water. Who’s the stupid ones here? US of course– the U.S. Now that the Rio Grande Valley is and has been in a serious drought–now they’re concerned and wanting to take action. Something that should have been done in the early 50’s. Read about the treaty HERE.
The other day while I was driving to a friends house, I crossed the local lake and was devastated to see how dry and low or non-existent it is in some parts. We need to wake up and do something about our natural resources before we are in worse shape than what we’re in. We owe that to our kids, their kids and the future of our existence.
I would like to challenge EVERYONE- especially those of you that have never considered the lack of water in our existence–
- RESTAURANT Owners and managers. You don’t have to offer water and fill and refill glass after glass —-ASK the customers if they want water at all. Surely you know how much water you throw out from glasses that customers are NOT drinking or didn’t ask for???
- Sprinkler System owners if you feel the absolute need to use your sprinklers at least make sure they are directed to the lawn and not the sidewalk, street or driveways.
- At home: take a shower vs a bath, don’t run the water just because you’re waiting for it to heat up, be resourceful and accountable!
- Congressmen/ Government Representatives— demand that Mexico pay us back for the water they used. It’s imperative for our farmers, South Texas, our waterways and our future! AND it’s about time they do!!! It’s a TREATY for crying out loud!
