A garden chest of drawers

05.02.20

The weather has been more than splendid this past week.  And if I say that…chances are that you will find me outdoors working on a little project.  This week it was repurposing an old furniture piece.   A piece to turn into a garden chest of drawers.

What does that even mean???

Our back porch needed some cuteness and something to organize things that always tend to make their way there.  Like small garden tools, the grandkids watering cans, frisbees, etc.

Instead of having them scattered here and there, I took an old chest of drawers that I bought from a neighbor several months ago and turned it into just that.

It started out as a piece that had been painted a sky blue.  A small drawer was busted so I had to re-glue and nail back together.  One of the larger drawers is still missing the side board glide that helps keep it on track.  We’ll have to duplicate one of the others to cut a new one.

But in the meantime, I cleaned it off and made some vinyl words for the larger drawers and applied those before painting the whole piece in black.

After two coats of the black paint, I sanded it down to distress and removed the vinyl letters to expose the old sky blue paint underneath. (I like to leave a little of what I “found it as” on my repurposed pieces!)

The final step was a coat of polyurethane to seal.

It will be living on our back porch and in the elements so the polyurethane helps protect it!

The hardware went back on and it was ready to tidy up our back porch with the chaos around it.

One of the drawers will hold some water bottles- as we’re always needing those and keeps the kids from going in and out every time they want a drink.  Another drawer will hold the hubs bbq-ing tools and necessities!

What do you think?  Now to show the grandsons where to store their yard tools & toys and keep this area tidy!

All in all this little project cost me $20 which is what I paid for the chest.  I had the paint, polyurethane & vinyl letters!

Love the Garden Chest. I am going to look at the second hand stores when the quarantine is lifted. Can’t wait to get started. Thanks for the idea.
