MacKenzie Childs Inspired Cake Stand

07.20.20

This is such a fun post!   Anyone else out there, that loves the whimsical nature of MacKenzie Childs home decor like I do?  I absolutely love the vibrance and patterns in her stuff!  This MacKenzie Childs inspired cake stand came after I found a stack of silver platters at an antique shop.

These platters ranged from $3-5 dollars each.  On a different shelf was a cute cast iron candle holder for $2.  I can’t pass up an opportunity of re-purposing or making something adorable.  Especially when my wheels were already turning and could visualize a MC knockoff and I it would only cost $5!!!

One platter and a candle holder later… I had this.

SUPPLIES aside from platter & candle holder:

  • gorilla glue (clear)
  • Rust-oleum Chalk Paint in white
  • Deco Art Metallic Lustre in gold
  • Blue Painters tape
  • Dixie Bell paint in coffee bean
  • Paintbrushes
  • ruler
  • Poly spray sealant

Start with spray painting the platter once it’s nice and clean.  Once dry you can tape off the areas to leave 1″ openings to paint in black.  Once the entire pan is dry, peel tape and place on opposing sections to paint those areas.  My rub n buff (picuted above was dried out and I couldn’t squeeze any out for using on the edges so I had to use the DecoArt metallic lustre.

Once I got done painting the top and bottom, I used gorilla glue in the clear to adhere both pieces together.  I left it for about 2 hours to dry completely and to make sure it had a strong hold.  I love this stuff!

Using some DecoArt metallic lustre, I applied with an old rag and just rubbed around the edges of the tray and the candle holder.  It gave it a beautiful touch and a nice accent.  After that dried I applied two coats of a protectant sealant on it.

This was a fun and whimsical project that only took a bit to make.  I love repurposing things and creating something new and cool that I can actually enjoy using.  This project cost under $12 with the supplies I had to buy. It’s a fun item that I will love using over and over again!
