Y’all know how I love to work with wood and how I love architectural pieces——well, exactly a year ago while shopping in a tiny little town that has the most awesome-est shop, I found this beautiful piece, laying outside in a heaping pile of junk. I believe it was probably once part of a headboard for a full size bed (based on the dimensions), but it had some missing pieces and had most definitely seen better days. The wood was rotted out (as you can see below), and had a whole lot of warping going on. I, however LOVED the carvings and designs that were on it, and so began my restoration of an architectural piece project.
I decided to start by carefully detaching all the carved pieces and trim and then clean them off, cut a new background and relay the pieces back together.
Now for the fun…
Excitement to me comes not only from seeing the end result but seeing the fabulous craftsmanship, especially when it’s a pretty date piece and you’re able to see what they used to put it all together. (I know pretty crazy here!) So I’ll spare you & jump into the different steps in restoring this little beauty!
Lots of cleaning, sanding, piecing together…
and painting—but totally worth the end result.
Then a minor little detail…
I don’t know it’s story before, but now…it will make it’s home on our living room wall, surrounded by family photos …all to tell a story, our story.
